AI, Disinformation, and Propaganda: Key Insights from Villa Albertine

On May 7th, I had the pleasure of speaking at Villa Albertine about AI, disinformation, and propaganda, joined by esteemed professors Asma Mhalla (Columbia University, École Polytechnique) and James Katz (Boston University). Our lively conversation covered eroding trust in institutions, the prioritization of trust and safety in flawed democracies, micro-targeting in Indian elections, and partnerships between traditional news outlets and tech AI firms. I'll share the video once it's live, but here are some key insights I discussed:

  1. Elections and Controversial Events: I'm concerned about the varied approaches AI and social media companies take toward elections and controversial events.

  2. Autonomous AI Governance: While generative AI warrants attention, I'm more concerned about autonomous AI. We need governance mechanisms that foster growth while preventing harm to VLOPs and VLOSEs in a way that's both implementable and enforceable. Should governance align with company-specific models like the Meta Oversight Board or follow a global baseline set by multilateral organizations?

  3. Inclusivity in Global Governance: How do we ensure that the Global South isn't excluded from governance and innovation talks when most policies and tech originate in the Global North? Despite the UN's efforts, India, the EU, and the U.S. dominate discussions on elections. Transparency is crucial to understanding how companies navigate the geopolitical landscape.

Stay tuned for the full video, where we delve deeper into these critical issues!
